The Stinger II, Auto Bed Leveling Print Head for 3D Printers

作者:淘博工业设计整理发布 日期:2019-03-14 人气:2260

About

Simplified; the Stinger is a mechanical device designed to use your 3D Printers Hot-End or Extruder to test the exact location and surface unevenness of your build plate and tell the printer how to compensate.

The hot-end/extruder/nozzle, “Business End” of the 3Dprinter must be precisely positioned above the build surface to lay down the filament material perfectly and have perfect bed and layer adhesion.

The Stinger does a test “Tap Dance” routine reading the build surface and sends a Digital Mesh to your 3D printer, so the proper position can be used and the nozzle will be adjusted "on the fly" as needed to compensate for small fluctuations in the bed surface.

The Tap Dance!
The Tap Dance!

Hi I'm David Ashenbrener.  I have been a mechanical and mechanism device designer and inventor all my life.
I have many CNC machine builds under my belt, so I have a unique understanding of integrating these devices with today's popular 3-D printing machines.

The first thing that stood out were the vast differences between the cheap $300 open frame 3D Printers and the $1200 plus 3D Printers, were that the more expensive ones had been developed into a more trouble free unit that you could load a program into, push a button and GO.
If you are into 3D printing you probably figured out without that perfect first layer your print will fail or be of poor quality at best.
The less expensive ones required a lot of fiddling, mainly Bed Leveling.

#1 BED LEVELING.
It seemed to me that the first improvement needed was to make the 3D printing machine automatically level the bed before each print. This insures a quality print EVERYTIME !

 The Four Corner "Leveling" Myth

The lower moving axis carriage plate of your typical 3D Printer has 4 corners that can be manually adjusted in relationship to each other. That leaves the actual, central printing area unaccounted for. Heavy glass plates are used because of their relative flatness however they're still not flat enough and their weight introduces momentum vibrations  (ghosting) to your prints. The build surface needs far more precision and interpretation of the finite variations in the surface. This requires a precision sensing and surface mapping device to talk to your printer and relay a digital mesh of the surface. The printer's firmware is able to make all the required "on the fly" adjustments to the tip height to compensate for the slightest variations and lay down a perfect 1st layer. "The Stinger II"

  #2 SERVICEABILITY.
Because all filaments will jam from time to time, or you need to perform general maintenance on your heater block or change worn tips, the entire Hotend must be easily removable. The Stinger 2 has been designed to remove your Hotend with a few screws. You can change components on your Hotend in seconds rather than hours, making maintenance an enjoyable experience.

#3 INTEGRATION.
All your cooling fans and fangs and sensors are neatly packaged within the Stinger unit. The fangs have been scientifically designed at the proper angle to direct the "laminar" airflow from both sides to avoid cavitation, which interferes with efficient solidification of the deposited filament and robs the heater block's ability to maintain high, even temperatures.

#4 QUALITY COMPONENTS
The Stinger is built from QUALITY LASER CUT COMPONENTS including a lightweight anodized aluminum frame, Laser welded Stainless Steel Chassis and Stainless Steel precision ball bearings. All printed parts are fabricated with hybrid ABS quality filament and assembled using Stainless steel fasteners and self locking nuts.

#5 LIFETIME WARRANTY.
Your Stinger is going to be around A LONG TIME as it is a Professional Quality printing accessory designed to make your printer "PLUG and PLAY"...FOREVER!

 # HAPPY PRINTING.
Think of the Stinger as the "EASY BUTTON" for your 3D printer. It takes the frustration out of printing. Now you can tap into your "creative self" experience instead of fiddling with your printer endlessly....

WHY MECHANICAL SENSOR MANAGEMENT?

The Stinger acts as a Liaison between your build surface and your sensor. It plays two important roles that no other system does. It contacts the surface, telescoping the entire hot end up to "meet" the sensor.

The accuracy of your sensor, no matter which technology type you have or desire, will not be affected by temperature in general, the temperature deficiency around the cooler outer portions of the bed or humidity and ambient temperature.

It also senses the exact spot on your bed that it needs to in order to write the mesh back to your machines memory. No shadows, No cold spots... it's all about the placement and precision of the sensor and repeat-ability of the position and feedback from your surface. Those conditions never change.

Inductive SensorInductive Sensor

SimProbe Inductive Sensor and Module, brings the most precise sensing technology to your 3D Printer, and it is designed to work with the Stinger II. The SimProbe Module and Inductive Sensor combination is like NO OTHER and comes pre-wired!
It has the choice of 2 circuits that are totally isolated from your printers board. One circuit "Normally Open" and one "Normally Closed", so this will work with any 3D Printer... The "State of the Art" INDUCTION Sensor Probe is proven to be 3-4X more accurate than other technologies! Additionally it is not affected by heat or humidity (think enclosure for the new higher grade, higher temperature plastics).
Attaches to your Printer's lower frame rail with 2 screws and T-nuts.

FAQ

 Q) What is a Stinger?

A) An all in one mechanical platform integrating a 3D printer’s hotend, cooling fan with ducting system,  that works with either your stock end switch or the SimProbe Inductive sensor, as an Auto Bed Leveling System.

 Q) What is different about the Stinger compared to other bed leveling systems?

A) The Stinger is combined in a way where these systems work together. The main chassis that the components mount to, articulates when it goes through it’s sensing routine. It uses the actual extruder nozzle to gently probe the surface, bringing it to the Sensor which in turn, very accurately sends the precise measurement to a mesh map in the firmware.

Q) What makes the Stinger better than other ABL Systems?

A) The first concern is accuracy. The Stinger’s advantage is it uses a very short range induction probe that is accurate to the single digit micron level, which isn’t practical to use if direct surface measurement is employed. (Your sensor would have to mount within a mm or less from your build surface and it would need to be metal). The Stinger gives you the ability to sense and print on any printer’s surface material.

Q) What stage of completion is your prototype?

A) We have taken our prototype (first tested about 15 months ago) to production stage. The first batch, were beta tested by a willing 3D printer community. After receiving feedback, it was refined, lightened and given a new streamlined design.
Most of the parts are in inventory and ready for assembly and packaging has been designed.

 Q) What machines does the Stinger work with?

A) It can work with many Cartesian type printers.
At this point our application is targeted to the popular Creality series of desktop printers and all their clones ( Tevo, Hictop, X3s TronXY SainSmart...)
Part of our strategy is to design adapter plates to accommodate all open frame type desktop printers. We are relying on our patrons to help supply the information as the campaign continues.
We are also committed to tailoring the necessary firmware routines for these custom applications.

Risks and challenges

The risks are minimal because;
We already have inventory of the components that require specialized manufacturing and most of the hardware. Should we need additional parts the suppliers are aligned and ready.

The mechanism has been manufactured and beta tested in the prototype and previous version.

We have 35 years of experience in custom manufacturing and are poised to put the Stinger II into production.

The challenges are;
Reaching enough of the 3D Printer market, the important influencers and press to spread the news. We have other team members ready to join in and insure success if need be.

The success or potential overwhelming volume of backers and product orders could cause delays in delivery, but not failure to deliver.

We need to obtain details and possibly printers of brands we have not yet fitted with the Stinger II. This will enable us to design any custom hardware and write the necessary Firmware.
