The Original is by Vitra

When a Vitra object arrives in a home, an office or a public space, it already comes with a long story. One of a designer who, in collaboration with Vitra, starts a seemingly endless development process, filled with trials and errors. One of a manufacturing attitude where the details are not the details, but what makes the quality of your new piece. And you take this tale forward enriching it with the stories of your own space.

Our story began in 1953 when Willi Fehlbaum, the founder of Vitra, discovered chairs designed by Charles and Ray Eames on a trip to the USA and decided to become a furniture manufacturer. He met the designer couple in person a short time later and developed a lasting friendship that has shaped our company ever since. Over the past decades, we have worked closely with some of the world’s most important designers and their descendants. These collaborations have led to the production of many classics: furnishings from another era that remain as timely and vital as ever and continue to move and inspire us. As a furniture manufacturer, we maintain a close relationship with our designers – whom we refer to as authors – and the result of these collaborations is always an original. Together with Vitra, our designers dedicate their time, expertise and craftsmanship to the development and launch of new products.

Vitra

Eames Elephant (Plywood, grey)

49125651.jpg

Charles and Ray Eames developed a toy elephant made of plywood in 1945; however, this piece never went into production. One prototype was shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1946 and still survives in the Eames family archives today. After a limited edition in 2007, Vitra launched serial production of the Eames Elephant in wood for the very first time in 2018.

Now in 2020, the Eames Elephant will be 75 years old. To commemorate this anniversary, Vitra is launching a special series in grey-stained wood – bringing the intricately produced collector's item even closer to its living counterparts.

The Eames Elephant (plywood, grey) is available as of September 2020 from nearly 600 Vitra retail partners. The special series is limited to 999 pieces, each of which have a special numbered label.

With his collection of Wall Clocks (1948-1960), George Nelson conceived a wide array of timepieces, many of which have since become icons of 1950s design.

As one of the most famous objects of Japanese post-war design, the Elephant Stool was created by the prolific product designer Sori Yanagi. The stackable plastic stool can be used both indoors and outside.

Miniatures Tulip Chair

The Tulip Chair is one of a series of chairs, stools, and tables developed by Eero Saarinen within a five-year period. The characteristic feature of the series is that the supporting structure has been pared to a central supporting stem »like a wineglass« in order to emphasise the uniformity of table and chair.

Miniatures Y-Chair

Hans J. Wegner is one of the leading representatives of traditional Danish furniture design. His work has a sound basis, namely a thorough training as a carpenter, and is rooted in a family tradition of craftsmen. He had already learned how to handle shapes and tools in his father's shoe-making shop. During his studies in Copenhagen he became familiar with masters of the Danish art of furniture-making. Wegner takes ideas from artistic joinery the world over and makes them specifically Danish.

Miniatures Vegetal (set of 3)

Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, 2008
The Vegetal is an organically-shaped chair that is meant to look as if it had taken its shape naturally. With that goal in mind and inspired by small trees which American gardeners had fashioned into the shape of seating furniture, the French designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec set about designing the Vegetal. Designed for outdoor use, the chair had to be both water-resistant and – for practical purposes – easily stackable.

1.jpg

The relationship of trust between these authors from all corners of the world and Vitra, who shares their ambitions, is at the very heart of the company’s product development process. Collaborations are always a subtle synthesis of artistic freedom, production know-how and industry knowledge. This philosophy has shaped the company’s culture since its early partnerships with seminal designers like Charles & Ray Eames and George Nelson.
