Teplo, connected tea pot for personalized tea experience

Introducing Teplo the world's first connected tea pot with a beautifully designed infuser used to brew truly personalized tea.

Brewing tea is an ancient art that has been perfected by tea masters over the course of thousands of years. Tea masters observe user behavior and body language to adjust tea brewing temperature and time, to cater to the user's needs.

Teplo aims to do just that, using its built-in sensors it collects essential information about you and your surroundings. Teplo then readjusts the brewing algorithm, to create a truly personalized tea drinking experience.  

The world is no stranger to smart tea brewers. But while most focus on what the tea needs, they neglect the other major player: the drinker. Teplo senses your heart rate, body temperature and other environmental factors like room temperature, humidity level, and sound level through proprietary sensors. Using these parameters, Teplo adjusts optimal brewing temperature and time. Thus brewing a truly personalized cup of tea, that is suited specifically to you. 

Majority of books advise to pour all tea until the last few tea drops. The last drops of tea have the richest flavor. They are called the golden drops.

Teplo is inspired by the golden drop. You will find symbolic references to the golden drop in the design. 

The infuser chamber is designed with stainless steel and a rose gold copper plating. It has a small ball at one end and the mesh at the other. The small ball at one end is to keep the infuser inverted in its natural state. The ball symbolizes the golden drop of tea. 

The auto rotation of the mesh and the infuser is designed in such a way that it enables good mixing of the tea and the water. 

Teplo comes with a set of tea drinking glasses. The bottom is curved representing the golden drop. Also, the glass has a thin side and thick side. You can taste the tea better at a lower temperature(less warm) using the thinner side. You can taste the tea better at a higher temperature(more warm) using the thinner side. 

Teplo senses environmental factors (temperature, brightness, humidity and sound) using respective sensors to brew tea based on location conditions.

Teplo also tracks your heart rate and finger temperature to modify brewing conditions to suit your mood and state of mind.   

Traditionally tea masters changed tea brewing conditions by seeing or feeling the drinker’s mental and physical state. Teplo hypothesizes to do the same by collecting your information and your surrounding information.  A heart rate and finger temperature sensor located on the base of the kettle detects user’s heart rate and body temperature. A noise, ambient light, surrounding temperature, humidity sensor located at the base collects the surrounding environment information. A brewing algorithm based on these parameters adjusts tea brewing conditions.

For example -

If you are stressed(judged with a combination of higher heart rate and body temperature, higher surrounding noise level, later in the day), Teplo will brew tea at a slightly lower temperature increasing the brewing time to make a more calming, sweeter tea. 

Similarly, if you are tired(judged with a combination of a lower heart rate normal body temperature, lower surrounding noise levels, early morning), Teplo will brew tea at a higher temperature to increase caffeine levels. 

Teplo safely stores your data and analyzes it in order to understand your lifestyle and taste preferences. With each brew Teplo learns more about your state of mind. Overtime, we aim to provide more accurate tea brewing that is personalized to you. This aggregated data is then used to provide more accurate tea recommendations from all over the world. 

Many of our social media and KickStarter followers were upset because we restricted shipping to the US and Japan only. Unfortunately, because of the voltage and the certification difference, we can deliver Teplo to people only in the U.S. and Japan.

If you drink your tea from the Teplo cup, we are sure that your tea experience will be completely different, because it was designed uniquely with thick and thin walls.

As you know every tea has different brewing temperature. Also drinking temperature differs depending on the tea, the environment you are in, and your preference. Generally it is said that you enjoy warmer tea with a thick tea cup. For example, mug cups for hot drinks tend to have thick walls. On the other side, thinner glass suites less warmer or cold teas.  

We designed the glass keeping all teas in mind and that is why we had a thin wall and a thick wall on opposite sides of the same Teplo glass.

We are two friends who came to the US to get our MBAs at Babson College. Coming from Japan and India, tea is really important to our culture. With a growing tea market in the US of $2.4B, we thought that there must be a better way to use technology to create a more personalized tea drinking experience. So, after countless discussions, we decided to create Teplo, a simple yet elegant solution that combines modern technology with traditional tea drinking using old techniques that tea masters performed.

We’ve spent the past 3 years designing and building both our hardware product as well as the technology that powers it. We brewed Teplo over 1000 times with 30 prototypes and 100 beta users and multiple tea blends. 

Now we are ready to launch Teplo and get it into the hands of tea drinkers. With the funds we raise from this campaign, we will be able to kickstart the manufacturing process. 

Risks and challenges

Bringing any product to market can present challenges and unfortunately, delays can occur due to unforeseen circumstances. We give you our promise to do our best to make sure that the production process is done efficiently and effectively. We have built a strong team to tackle these challenges over the past years, and we are confident we will bring Teplo to life.
